Bioma Café

Bioma Café is a company that emerged with the essential purpose of producing specialty coffees. All investments made since the acquisition of our headquarters property, Fazenda Olhos D'água, have been geared towards high-quality production. This includes careful consideration of terroir selection, cultivation management, harvesting, and post-harvest processes. We are highly meticulous about quality, treating each batch of coffee produced as unique.

The terroir of Bioma Cafes comprises 6 production units, including the Olhos D’água farm, where the facilities are located, 229 hectares planted in total. The terroir is at 1,100 and 1,206 meters above sea level, a region that presents a perfect balance between seasons and perfect conditions for the production of high quality coffees. Another important aspect is the producer`s concern with social and environmental issues. Proof of this is the respect for employees and the environment, attested by the UTZ certification

A part that goes beyond all crop management, Bioma Café believes that empowering the team, showing the importance of each one`s work and that together they build a purpose, is an important and fundamental part of coffee production. "We are transforming people`s lives through the coffee we produce." All Bioma Cafés harvest is carried out in a mechanized manner. Measuring brix, evaluating the percentage of crop maturation, vibration calibration and the amount of machine rods to remove a higher percentage of ripe fruits are part of the Bioma Farm`s harvesting strategy.

The Cerrado Mineiro region, located in northwest of Minas Gerais State is a world-recognized, high-quality coffee producing origin and became the first Protected Geographical Indication in Brazil in 2005, with full Designation of Origin in 2013.

A strong characteristic of this region is its well-defined seasons - a hot, wet summer followed by a pleasantly dry winter. The dry climate during harvest eliminates potential problems with humidity during the drying process.

Minas Gerais is Brazil’s principal agricultural state, and the Cerrado is home to many of the country’s celebrated coffee estates, with expertise in planting, harvesting, drying, and sorting. We love Cerrado coffees for their big body, rich chocolate notes, and velvety texture when pulled as espresso.

Today, the area’s 4,500 farmers produce a combined average of 6 million bags per harvest, with an average of 35 bags per hectare. To reach these production levels, producers had to first adapt to the region’s conditions. Coffee farmers first arrived in Cerrado in the 1970’s, after being pushed out of the state of Parana by frost and out of the state of São Paulo by nematodes.

They found the soil in Cerrado to be very acidic, which they rectified with the application of calcium to create the healthy soils they enjoy today. Cerrado coffee farms are cultivated in areas with elevations varying between 800 and 1,300 meters above sea level and are known for consistently producing high quality coffees with a repeatable profile. Independent of farm size, the spirit of professionalism is present throughout Cerrado’s coffee producers.

Entrepreneurialism is part of farmers’ DNA, and many producers are second or third generation growers who also hold degrees in agronomic engineering, business management, and administration. While each family narrative is different, Cerrado is characterized by an enterprising attitude.

Reuse of waste from coffee processing, constant reduction in the use of chemicals in management, opting for natural and biological sources, planting of service trees associated with coffee (contours), planting of native trees are part of the actions of Fazenda Bioma to sustainable coffee production

Transformation is the word that defines the coffees produced on the farm. "We defend the principles of sustainability in coffee growing, and this is how we produce high quality coffee. Through this cup of coffee we are transforming lives, transforming lives because in our daily lives we contribute to a more sustainable world."
