About the Grower

About Grower

Décio Bruxel

In 1976 in Chapadão de São Pedro, Municipality of Presidente Olegário/MG, I started agricultural activities with bean production. As a way to diversify enterprises, in 1983 I started the commercial pig farming project. Due to my passion for the coffee culture and in order to reuse pig manure, in 1985 I started growing coffee in the Cerrado of Minas Gerais, initially in the municipality of Patos de Minas and soon after it was possible to expand to Varjão de Minas. Always investing in technology and process innovation in search of a quality drink that would please the producer and consumers, today our coffee has qualities that rank it among the best specialty coffees produced in the country.

About

Production

First, we define the Crop Plan, where the productivity per plot associated with leaf and soil analyses are estimated, through these analyses and productivity estimates we define the fertilization. With a history of pests and diseases we also define the plan for the use of phytosanitary products that will depend on the monitoring that is carried out every 15 days, corroborating the practices of integrated pest and disease management. We carry out the planting of Brachiaria in between rows, to promote improvements to the soil profile and to protect it against bad weather and the control is carried out primarily by a brushcutter, being used herbicides at most twice a year. All our areas are irrigated and for better use of water resources, irrigation is carried out based on data from weather stations within the farms. The pruning we use is the recepa (cutting each sprout to a low height) and esqueletamento (cutting off all plagiotropic branches at 20-30 cm from the orthotropic branch), varying according to age, vigor and productivity of each plot. About 60% by drip, a system that allows us to carry out weekly fertilization via water, the other 40% are irrigated via central Pivot.

About

Harvest

The planning is according to the ripeness of the crops, considering the existence of earlier and later cultivars. From the time of flowering it is possible to estimate when each area will be harvested. Through the evaluation of the crops, aiming at greater production of cherry coffees, starting the harvesting with 15 to 20% of green coffees, it is possible to harvest a greater number of coffees with full maturity, finishing the harvest and providing a rest period for the next crop. The harvesting period generally extends from May to September. Selective mechanized harvesting is carried out on plots with varieties with the highest drinking potential.

About

Region

The Cerrado Mineiro region, located in northwest of Minas Gerais State is a world-recognized, high-quality coffee producing origin and became the first Protected Geographical Indication in Brazil in 2005, with full Designation of Origin in 2013.

A strong characteristic of this region is its well-defined seasons - a hot, wet summer followed by a pleasantly dry winter. The dry climate during harvest eliminates potential problems with humidity during the drying process.

Minas Gerais is Brazil’s principal agricultural state, and the Cerrado is home to many of the country’s celebrated coffee estates, with expertise in planting, harvesting, drying, and sorting. We love Cerrado coffees for their big body, rich chocolate notes, and velvety texture when pulled as espresso.

Today, the area’s 4,500 farmers produce a combined average of 6 million bags per harvest, with an average of 35 bags per hectare. To reach these production levels, producers had to first adapt to the region’s conditions. Coffee farmers first arrived in Cerrado in the 1970’s, after being pushed out of the state of Parana by frost and out of the state of São Paulo by nematodes.

They found the soil in Cerrado to be very acidic, which they rectified with the application of calcium to create the healthy soils they enjoy today. Cerrado coffee farms are cultivated in areas with elevations varying between 800 and 1,300 meters above sea level and are known for consistently producing high quality coffees with a repeatable profile. Independent of farm size, the spirit of professionalism is present throughout Cerrado’s coffee producers.

Entrepreneurialism is part of farmers’ DNA, and many producers are second or third generation growers who also hold degrees in agronomic engineering, business management, and administration. While each family narrative is different, Cerrado is characterized by an enterprising attitude.

Message

The partnership with Nucoffee is a complement to the work already done on the property, a partnership in line with our principles, in order to strengthen the commitment to the quality of our services, processes and products. DB’s success is due to two main factors: first the family, the support I have always had and today the direct participation in the management by my sons Daniel, Marcos and recently the entry of my daughter Cristina. And no doubt the almost 1,000 direct employees who helped to build our history. If we have managed to get this far it is thanks to the work, the family and the employees. This is a family business, where we can make decisions more easily, identified with our profile. We are sure that there will be a long continuity. DB will not stop. Our vocation is to work, to produce food, and we will continue with this vocation.
